From May 12 to May 18, communities across the United States celebrated National Police Week, an annual tradition dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers and remembering those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The commemoration included a tribute to Bonne Terre Police Officer Lane Burns, who tragically lost his life in 2022.

Unfortunately, recent years have seen an increase in danger for law enforcement officers. As per FBI data, there were 79,091 officers assaulted in 2023 - marking the highest number within a single year over the past decade. Additionally, 2023 witnessed a ten-year high in the number of officers shot.

The surge in violence against police is attributed by some to policies perceived as lenient on crime and calls for defunding or abolishing the police. Critics argue that such measures create an environment where criminals believe they can commit crimes with impunity, including acts of violence against law enforcement.

In response to these challenges, several measures were passed during National Police Week by the Republican-led House. These include a resolution condemning calls to defund the police and legislation aimed at addressing the rise in anti-police attacks. The House also passed a bill allowing qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry firearms on state, local, and private property otherwise open to the public.

House Republicans also took steps to address issues arising from President Joe Biden’s border policy, which they argue contributes to increased lawlessness and violent crime. They cite data showing over 615,000 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions or pending charges currently on ICE's non-detained docket.

A recent incident involving two NYPD officers being attacked near Times Square by more than a dozen migrants further underscores these concerns. Following this event, House Republicans passed the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act. This legislation mandates that illegal aliens who assault officers be swiftly arrested and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement until they are removed from the U.S.

The role of law enforcement is undoubtedly challenging, involving long hours, safety risks, and significant stress on families. Policymakers have a responsibility to honor these dedicated individuals and show them the respect they deserve for risking their lives to ensure public safety.
