As a young child, I always enjoyed helping out on my grandparents’ farm. It was an opportunity to spend quality time with family and learn the value of hard work. This experience inspired me to join FFA, study agriculture in college, and eventually purchase the farm using money from harvesting timber on the property while I was in law school. Running my farm, which has been in my family for four generations, isn’t easy but is highly rewarding.
The dream of owning a farm or ranch is common among many in southeast and south-central Missouri. This sentiment was evident during this year’s Farm Tour, an annual tradition where I visit farms, ranches, and agricultural businesses to showcase Missouri agriculture and understand the challenges facing those who work hard to feed and fuel the world.
This year’s tour began at Gidcumb Farms in Dent County, where my family has lived since the early 1800s. Three generations run Gidcumb Farms, producing peppers, okra, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, and more. Like many farm families, the Gidcumbs have faced challenges with federal regulations. In Washington, I am working tirelessly to reduce these burdens so farmers can focus on their livelihoods.
Trade policy remains a significant concern for farmers and ranchers. One frustration with the Biden-Harris administration is its reluctance to stand up for our agricultural community regarding trade issues.
Hunter and Tristan Duff of Duff Farms in Sikeston expressed that ranchers and farmers are disadvantaged because trade partners aren’t playing fair – and the administration isn’t pushing back. Whether it’s Mexico refusing U.S. corn or India subsidizing domestic rice production, I have been fighting to hold our trade partners accountable. Despite these challenges, the Duff brothers are successfully expanding their cattle operation after taking over from their late grandfather. I will continue advocating for policies that support families like theirs.
Agriculture is foundational to southeast and south-central Missouri’s economy. Inspiring younger generations to pursue careers in agriculture is crucial for rural communities' long-term success. This was emphasized during my remarks at Missouri State University-West Plains' event celebrating its Agriculture and Science Education Center expansion.
MSU-West Plains is strengthening rural communities through initiatives like a new Collegiate FFA Chapter and rodeo program. As a former FFA student myself, I am enthusiastic about these developments. FFA helped me develop leadership skills and overcome public speaking fears while inspiring me to become a cattle rancher. MSU-West Plains’ new programs will undoubtedly inspire future generations toward agricultural careers.
Despite recent challenges under the Biden-Harris administration, Missouri farmers and ranchers remain resilient. They work diligently from sunrise to sundown to support their families. As their representative in Congress, I will continue advocating for their most pressing issues. Strengthening our rural communities remains my top priority.
