As the Christmas season approaches, many reflect on its significance and traditions. The holiday is a time for gathering with loved ones, though it can also bring stress from travel and preparations. It serves as a reminder of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The story from Luke 2:8-14 often resonates during this period. "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord," an angel proclaimed to shepherds over two thousand years ago. Following this announcement, an army of angels declared, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!"
The message was delivered not to royalty or wealthy individuals but to humble shepherds. This choice underscores the theme that success is not measured by material wealth but by living according to faith. The Bible frequently emphasizes equality and humility.
Many in southeast and south-central Missouri may find parallels between their lives and Jesus' background. He came from a working-class family; his mother Mary hailed from an impoverished town while his father Joseph was a craftsman. Yet they were chosen for their humility and faithfulness.
This season also coincides with Hanukkah for Jewish communities. Since October 7, 2023, there has been a concerning rise in hate against Jewish people. Many hope for safety and wish them a Happy Hanukkah.
Christmas remains a celebration of Jesus' birth and salvation. As the season unfolds, may love and joy fill homes across communities.
