Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith expressed support for the Trump Administration's recent decision to impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico, and China. In a statement, Smith emphasized that these tariffs align with President Trump's commitment to protect American communities and enhance national security.
"President Trump is delivering on his promise to take bold action to protect our communities, secure our borders, and bring in additional revenues to the federal government," said Smith. He argued that the tariffs convey a strong message against countries that fail to curb illegal drug trafficking and immigration into the United States.
Smith highlighted specific issues with each country involved. He criticized Canada for not allowing adequate access to its dairy market and pointed out Mexico's barriers against U.S. corn exports. He stressed the need for these nations, along with China, to take necessary actions against drug cartels and halt the import of drugs like fentanyl into American communities.
The chairman also noted the financial benefits of such measures: "These measures will also bring in billions in new revenue to the U.S. government – as shown by the tariffs that President Trump previously applied to Chinese goods which have already been producing more than $40 billion in additional revenue every year."
Smith concluded by expressing his willingness to collaborate with the Trump Administration on trade decisions prioritizing America's interests.
