Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith expressed his support for President Trump's recent executive order aimed at countering foreign digital service taxes. These taxes, imposed by countries like Canada and several European nations, are viewed as discriminatory against U.S. innovators and workers.

"From the very beginning President Trump has seen these digital service taxes for the threat they are: Attacks on U.S. innovators that undermine our economy and hurt our workers," Smith stated. He highlighted Trump's efforts during his first term to combat such taxes from various economies including India, Turkey, France, and others in Europe.

Smith criticized the Biden Administration's approach to this issue, stating that "The Biden Administration chose weakness." He accused Democrats of abandoning established U.S. positions on digital trade rules and suspending Section 301 investigations initiated by Trump to hold trading partners accountable for unfair DSTs. According to Smith, the administration has not supported legislation led by Ways and Means Republicans aimed at imposing reciprocal taxes on foreign businesses with discriminatory practices against American companies.

He concluded by expressing confidence in the current administration's commitment to prioritize American interests: "Fortunately, the American people brought back to the White House a President who will stand up for American businesses and workers."

The committee also called for decisive action from the Biden Administration regarding Canada's digital services tax.
