Today, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) sent a letter to acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. Stephen Ferrara and Acting Director of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Dr. David J. Smith. The letter urges protection for Fort Leonard Wood’s newly built General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (GLWACH).

Senator Hawley expressed concerns over potential changes to GLWACH's resourcing by DHA, particularly regarding the shift to the Capitated Accountability Readiness Evaluation (CARE) model, which he believes could reduce funding significantly.

“In recent weeks, members of my staff have received credible reports that DHA continues to consider major changes to the resourcing of GLWACH," stated Senator Hawley. He further mentioned that any reduction in funding or services could impact healthcare for servicemembers and their families and affect Ft. Leonard Wood's military functions.

This follows a previous letter from May 13, 2025, where Senator Hawley had outlined similar concerns about potential reductions at GLWACH.

The letter also requests answers from DHA on several questions related to potential reductions in resources and changes in care provided by GLWACH. The deadline for these responses is August 1, 2025.
