Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has expressed strong disapproval following President Biden's decision to grant a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden. This move comes after President Biden had previously stated, "I will not pardon him," regarding the charges against Hunter Biden for illegal possession of a firearm and tax evasion.
Chairman Smith commented on the situation, saying, "The same President Biden who unequivocally said in June he would abide by the jury’s decision in his son Hunter Biden’s case and would not pardon him regardless of the outcome has now reversed course and given his son a get out of jail free card." He accused the administration of obstructing investigations into what he described as "the Biden Family’s influence peddling schemes."
Smith referred to documents from IRS whistleblowers suggesting that Hunter Biden believed any legal issues would disappear once Joe Biden became President. According to Smith, this pardon exemplifies how "one business partner in Joe Biden takes care of another in Hunter Biden to protect the family business."
He further criticized President Biden for reversing federal convictions related to six felonies and six misdemeanors committed by Hunter Biden. Smith argued that this action undermines previous Democratic rhetoric about upholding the rule of law. However, he assured that this decision would not obscure evidence collected by IRS whistleblowers indicating corruption within the family.
Smith concluded with a call for continued investigation into what he terms as attempts by the Bidens to exploit political office for personal gain.
