Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has been reappointed by the Republican Steering Committee to continue his role as chairman for the 119th Congress. In a statement, Smith emphasized the importance of delivering relief to working families and small businesses facing economic challenges.
Smith highlighted the need to build on the 2017 Trump tax cuts and collaborate with President Trump to prevent tax increases for American workers, families, farmers, and small businesses. He stated, "The Ways and Means Committee will be the tip of the spear in advancing policies that grow the economy, increase wages, create jobs and bring more of our neighbors into the workforce."
Smith also addressed international trade issues, mentioning plans to combat unfair practices by foreign competitors such as China. "We will use all the tools of trade to help get fairer treatment for American workers and our farmers," he said.
Over the past two years, Smith noted that the committee has conducted hearings and roundtables across the country to understand challenges faced under high inflation. These efforts have included over 120 events in 20 states since April. Smith expressed readiness for action: "Republicans are ready to hit the ground running, and I’m humbled and appreciative of the trust my colleagues have placed in me."
