Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has been reappointed by the Republican Steering Committee to continue his role as chairman for the 119th Congress. In a statement, Smith expressed his commitment to addressing economic challenges faced by American families and businesses.
"We have before us a tremendous opportunity and a responsibility to deliver for working families and small businesses across America who are crying out for relief after four years of rising prices and crippling economic uncertainty," said Smith. He emphasized the importance of building on the 2017 Trump tax cuts and collaborating with President Trump to prevent tax increases on American workers, families, farmers, and small businesses.
Smith outlined the committee's goals: "The Ways and Means Committee will be the tip of the spear in advancing policies that grow the economy, increase wages, create jobs and bring more of our neighbors into the workforce." The committee aims to lower costs of goods and services, expand access to affordable healthcare in rural areas and for seniors, while strengthening the nation's economic foundation.
Addressing international trade issues is also a priority. Smith stated that combatting unfair trade practices from countries like China is essential: "We will use all the tools of trade to help get fairer treatment for American workers and our farmers."
Over the past two years, Smith noted that the committee has traveled across various states holding hearings and roundtables. These events aimed at understanding challenges under what he described as "the worst inflation crisis in a generation" have informed their approach toward crafting an economic growth package.
Since April, with the establishment of Ways and Means Tax Teams, over 120 events have been held in 20 different states. "Republicans are ready to hit the ground running," Smith remarked. He expressed gratitude for his colleagues' trust in leading these efforts at the Ways and Means Committee.
