Saint Francis Healthcare System is addressing the prevalence of head and neck cancers in the United States by offering free screenings. According to recent data, six percent of newly diagnosed cancers involve these areas, with over 70 percent of oropharyngeal cancers linked to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). These types of cancer are increasingly seen in younger adults.
Early detection is crucial as it leads to better treatment options. However, half of the cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, making early screening vital.
Cape ENT Group, a medical partner of Saint Francis Healthcare System, will conduct free head and neck cancer screenings on April 21 from 8 am to noon and April 22 from 1 pm to 4 pm. The screenings will take place at Cape ENT Group located at Saint Francis Medical Center.
Symptoms that may indicate head and neck cancers include neck masses or lumps, jaw swelling, chronic sore areas, difficulty swallowing or chewing, ear pain, recurrent nosebleeds, dental pain, hoarseness, oral bleeding, and difficulty breathing.
Individuals interested in registering for a free screening can call 573-335-4448.
