Today, Representative Jason Smith, along with members of the Missouri delegation, urged President Donald J. Trump to authorize a federal disaster declaration in response to severe weather that impacted 28 counties in Missouri. The request follows Governor Mike Kehoe's appeal for federal assistance to aid recovery efforts after recent tornadoes and flooding.
"The devastation in Missouri caused by severe weather, violent tornadoes, and widespread flooding in recent weeks is heartbreaking and has left many communities in Southeast Missouri struggling to get back on their feet," stated Representative Smith. He praised the governor's prompt emergency declaration and urged federal action to support the state's recovery. "The severity of this disaster necessitates a coordinated response from both the state and federal governments to begin deploying vital aid, including shelter assistance and other desperately needed recovery efforts."
The letter addressed to President Trump was signed by Smith, Representative Wesley Bell, Senators Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt, and Representatives Ann Wagner, Bob Onder, Mark Alford, Emmanuel Cleaver, Sam Graves, and Eric Burlison. Governor Kehoe's request pertains to assistance for the cleanup following the storms on March 14-15.
