U.S. Senator Josh Hawley introduced a new piece of legislation, the Enhanced Penalties for Criminal Flag Burners Act, which seeks to impose harsher penalties on individuals who burn the American flag while committing federal offenses. This legislative move has garnered support from President Trump, who recently urged Congress to pass the bill and deliver it to his desk.
Senator Hawley is actively seeking additional support for the bill among his colleagues in the Senate. Currently, Senators Mike Lee of Utah and Roger Marshall of Kansas are co-sponsoring this initiative.
“Committing a crime is not protected under the First Amendment. If you are putting people and property in danger and burning our flag in the process, you should serve extra time in prison,” said Senator Hawley. “I encourage all of my Republican colleagues to join President Trump in supporting this legislation. It’s time to restore law and order in America and demand our flag be treated with respect.”
The proposal comes amidst ongoing riots across major cities where public safety has been compromised by acts of violence, including attacks on federal buildings and destruction of property. The recent riots in Los Angeles have involved various criminal activities such as assaults on law enforcement officers, vandalism, theft, along with instances where rioters have burned American flags.
If enacted into law, the Enhanced Penalties for Criminal Flag Burners Act would ensure that those who burn flags during their criminal activities face an additional year of imprisonment. The bill emphasizes recognizing the risks posed by such actions to both people and property.
