Today, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., urging him to reinstate safety regulations on the chemical abortion drug mifepristone. This request follows Hawley's previous efforts in securing a commitment from RFK Jr. to review the drug's safety.
In his letter, Senator Hawley expressed gratitude for the commitment to review safety data after new studies raised concerns about mifepristone. He referenced a prior communication with FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who also committed to reviewing the drug's safety due to alarming new data showing high adverse event rates.
Hawley cited recent studies conducted by the Foundation for the Restoration of America and Ethics and Public Policy Center that found serious adverse health events occurring in 11% of women using mifepristone, a rate much higher than reported by the FDA. Additionally, he noted that mifepristone had a 5.26% failure rate for pregnancy termination, exceeding FDA label information.
Senator Hawley concluded his letter by urging swift action against providers distributing mifepristone contrary to federal regulations, emphasizing that these measures are necessary for protecting women's health and safety.
