Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced new legislation that would restrict health insurance plans offered on federal healthcare exchanges from covering abortion and gender transition procedures for minors. The bill, named the Prohibiting Abortion & Transgender Procedures on the Exchanges Act, aims to limit coverage for these services for individuals under the age of 18.
“It’s time to ban abortion and gender-transition procedures for minors on the healthcare exchanges. No more loopholes,” said Senator Hawley.
The proposed legislation would incorporate language similar to the Hyde Amendment into federal health plan terms. This would prevent any plan on the exchanges from covering abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is at risk. In addition, it would prohibit coverage of gender transition procedures or related drugs for minors.
The bill has received support from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
