The Saint Francis Foundation and Saint Francis Auxiliary recognized 23 students who are pursuing careers in healthcare at a scholarship luncheon held on July 25. Each student received $2,000 to support their education in healthcare-related fields.
The scholarships were funded through various memorials and named funds. Recipients came from multiple communities including Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Scott City, Sedgewickville, Columbia, Chester (IL), Evansville (IL), Poplar Bluff, and Charleston. The awards are aimed at students enrolled in accredited healthcare programs.
Whitney James, one of the recipients and a Registered Nurse as well as a Neuro Medical clinical educator at Saint Francis Healthcare System, shared her perspective during the event. “This scholarship is helping me grow not just as a nurse and educator, but as a role model for the students I teach and the little humans I’m raising at home. Thank you for believing in me and in the future of nursing.” James is currently working toward her Master of Science in Clinical Nurse Leadership at Central Methodist University.
Blair Huckstep, also a Registered Nurse at Saint Francis, spoke about the importance of the program from her family’s experience sponsoring one of the scholarships. “My Mom was called to serve her patients. The Saint Francis scholarship program not only gives back to others but allows my mother’s legacy and others like her to live on.”
Since its start in 1980, the Saint Francis Healthcare Scholarship Program has provided over $929,000 in support to college students seeking healthcare degrees. Funding comes from donations to both the Foundation and Auxiliary.
Eligibility for these scholarships requires applicants to have completed at least one year in an accredited healthcare program, be currently enrolled, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, submit all application materials by deadline, and reside within the defined service area of Saint Francis Health Care System.
