Rep. Jason Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 8th district since 2013, used his social media platform on September 30, 2025, to criticize Democratic lawmakers over government funding negotiations and the threat of a shutdown.

In a post at 12:04 UTC, Smith wrote, "Even as recent as last Congress, Democrats acknowledged and warned of the consequences of shutting the government down. Now that President Trump is in the White House, they have changed their tune. Democrats are willing to shut down the government, leaving our troops without".

Later that day at 15:14 UTC, he continued his criticism by referencing recent legislative actions: "Two weeks ago, House Republicans passed a straightforward bill to keep the government open. Democrats voted 13 times for similar government funding bills during the Biden Administration. But now that President Trump is in the White House, Democrats want to hold Americans’".

At 16:44 UTC on September 30, Smith further accused Democrats of rejecting efforts to maintain government operations: "Democrats are rejecting a straightforward plan to keep the government open. Instead they are demanding over $1 trillion in new spending on items like free health care for illegal aliens while cutting $50 billion in investments for rural health care. Washington Democrats would".

Smith has served Missouri’s 8th District in Congress since replacing Jo Ann Emerson in 2013 and previously served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2005 to 2013. Born in St Louis in 1980 and currently residing in Salem, Smith holds degrees from both the University of Missouri and Oklahoma City University.
