Rep. Jason Smith, who represents Missouri’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently criticized Democratic lawmakers on social media for their approach to the ongoing government shutdown and related budget negotiations.
On October 8, 2025, Smith wrote, "In order to end their government shutdown, Democrats are demanding taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants and a $50 billion cut to rural health care. That is an outrageous attack on American taxpayers and rural communities all across this country - including in my".
The following day, Smith continued his criticism, specifically naming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats. On October 9, 2025, he posted, "Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are holding the economy and our government hostage. The House did its job by funding the government and paying our troops.
Now it's time for Democrats to step up, do what’s right, and put the American people first. https://t.co/MYdY4cAUmY".
Later that same day, Smith added, "Democrats call it a “deal” — but it’s a deal where they get everything & America gets a shutdown.
That’s not compromise. It’s ransom politics.
Millions of hardworking Americans are being held hostage by Democrats’ radical shutdown.
Smith has served in Congress since 2013 after replacing Jo Ann Emerson and previously held a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2005 to 2013. Born in St. Louis in 1980, Smith is currently 42 years old and resides in Salem, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in 2001 and later earned a Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University in 2004.
