U.S. Representative Jason Smith, who serves Missouri’s 8th district, used his social media account on October 9, 2025, to criticize Democratic lawmakers regarding the ongoing government shutdown and their approach to negotiations.
In a post published at 17:40 UTC, Smith wrote, "When Democrats say 'it’s getting better for us,' they mean 'it’s getting worse for you.'" Later that day, at 18:00 UTC, he continued his criticism by stating, "We're on week 2 of Democrats' shutdown and they're already fantasizing about shutting down government again. Pure chaos." In a subsequent post at 19:37 UTC, Smith summarized his view on the situation, writing, "Democrats' plan in a nutshell: shutdown government demand everything offer nothing call it bipartisanship."
Smith has represented Missouri's 8th district in the U.S. Congress since 2013, following his tenure in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2005 to 2013. He was born in St. Louis in 1980 and resides in Salem. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri and a Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University.
