Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have demanded answers and action from UnitedHealth Group (UHG) following a cyberattack by the ransomware group BlackCat in February. In a letter to the CEO of UHG, the senators expressed concerns about the breach of critical health care systems and the impact on patient and provider data.

The senators emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting how the failure to safeguard against cyber threats led to dire consequences. Providers struggled to carry out essential tasks like filling prescriptions and submitting insurance claims due to the extended outage caused by the cyberattack.

The letter also addressed the significance of Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UHG, in the American health care system. The cyberattack on Change Healthcare, which processes a significant portion of health care transactions in the country, paralyzed the entire system, underscoring the widespread implications of the breach.

Furthermore, the senators raised questions about the response and preparedness of UHG in the aftermath of the attack. They called for transparency regarding the breach, the handling of compromised data, and the steps taken to prevent future incidents. Additionally, they demanded information on the financial assistance provided to impacted providers and the effectiveness of UHG's recovery efforts.

The senators stressed the importance of accountability in addressing the crisis, urging UHG to provide detailed responses to specific inquiries by April 15, 2024. They highlighted the need for improved cybersecurity measures and expressed concerns about the financial stability of health care providers affected by the cyberattack.

The letter from Senators Hawley and Blumenthal serves as a call for action and transparency in the wake of the UHG cyberattack, emphasizing the need for accountability and safeguards to protect the integrity of the health care system.
