The Ways and Means Committee of the 119th Congress held its organizational meeting recently, where Chairman Smith addressed key priorities for the committee. Emphasizing the urgency of their tasks, Smith highlighted that "The Ways and Means Committee will be central to delivering relief to Americans after four years of high prices, high interest rates, and high uncertainty."
Smith outlined several pressing issues that the committee will tackle. With President Trump set to take office in a few days, Smith noted the importance of preventing tax increases on over 200 million filers. He warned that without action from Congress, various tax benefits would be reduced or eliminated.
Additionally, Smith stated that the committee would work on ensuring fair treatment for American farmers, workers, and businesses by foreign governments. Efforts will also focus on increasing domestic production to reduce reliance on China and improving healthcare access in rural areas.
Reflecting on past achievements, Smith recalled bipartisan successes such as tax legislation passed with overwhelming support and child welfare reform. He also mentioned advancements in healthcare policies and trade agreements aimed at boosting American manufacturing jobs.
In response to recent global events, Smith highlighted the committee's oversight efforts. Following an attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel, the committee investigated potential abuses of the tax code related to antisemitism and terrorism.
Smith reiterated his commitment to listening to Americans' concerns through hearings and sessions across the country. "In this Congress," he said, "we will continue to put the concerns of America’s working class first."
Concluding his remarks, Smith expressed a willingness to collaborate with colleagues across party lines for bipartisan solutions. He emphasized that "We have a big responsibility to tackle the equally big challenges facing our fellow Americans."
