After the Senate confirmed Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary with a 68-29 vote, Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith from Missouri's 8th district expressed his support for the decision. In a statement, Smith said, "My heartfelt congratulations to Secretary Bessent for his successful confirmation. Secretary Bessent will be a champion for working families and getting our economy back on track under President Trump."
Smith highlighted Bessent's personal journey from poverty to success as an embodiment of the American Dream, which he hopes can be restored for all citizens. He emphasized the importance of economic growth and suggested that extending and building on Trump's tax cuts would enable families and small businesses to plan their futures. According to Smith, "We can deliver the immediate economic relief they voted for."
Smith assured American workers that they have a Treasury Secretary who supports them against foreign influences on domestic tax policies. He also mentioned that Bessent would address issues within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which Smith described as needing reform due to past controversies such as politicized leaks and delays in law implementation.
Looking ahead, Smith expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Bessent on various economic initiatives. "I look forward to working with Secretary Bessent to unleash the American economy through sound tax policy, deregulation, deficit reduction, and more American energy," he stated.
