In a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri urged former President Joe Biden to release records demonstrating his consent for staff use of the autopen. Hawley pressed for transparency regarding Biden's authorization of the device for pardons, clemency, and stay applications.
"Today, I call on former President Biden and his staff: release the documents… Show us the documents where the President authorized the use of the pen for every single pardon and clemency and stay application. Let’s see it. Let’s see all of it. And if you won’t do it, we should subpoena those documents, and we should find out the truth of who was really running the White House because I think we can see it was not Biden," stated Senator Hawley.
Senator Hawley criticized Democrats for allegedly misleading the public about Biden's mental capacity during his presidency. He noted their absence at the hearing focused on this issue.
"Notice something about the Dems' side of the dais for this hearing on Biden's mental capability? There's NO ONE there," he remarked in a tweet.
Hawley further accused Democrats of avoiding accountability and refusing to participate in discussions concerning Biden's fitness for office. "All you have to do is look over at this side of the dais to see that the stonewall continues… Where are they?" he questioned. "They lied to us for four years, and we know they lied. They know they lied. It’s why they’re not here. They don’t want to answer a single question. They can’t bear to show their faces in public."
The senator has consistently expressed doubts about Biden's cognitive abilities, notably calling on then Attorney General Merrick Garland in February 2024 to consider invoking the 25th Amendment or pursuing prosecution following a report release.
