Rep. Jason Smith, who represents Missouri’s 8th district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media account this week to comment on issues ranging from immigration enforcement to trade negotiations and tax policy.
On July 24, Smith addressed Democratic reactions to the removal of certain immigrants, writing, “It’s very telling that Democrats are outraged that violent illegal immigrants are being removed from our country, and not more concerned for the American citizens that have had their lives ruined by violence that could and should have been prevented.”
Later the same day, he criticized Democratic positions on international trade: “Democrats would rather sell out American producers in order to appease foreign nations. Their outrage at President Trump’s trade negotiations proves this. Unlike Democrats, Republicans prioritize American producers being treated fairly over foreign nations' interests.”
On July 25, Smith promoted a recent legislative effort focused on tax policy: “The biggest winner under The One, Big, Beautiful Bill is the working class. Not only did it stop the largest tax hike on the working class in American history, but it delivered an over 20% tax cut for families making between $15,000 and $30,000 annually. This is the largest tax”
Smith has served as a member of Congress since 2013 after replacing Jo Ann Emerson and previously represented constituents in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2005 to 2013. Born in St Louis in 1980 and currently residing in Salem at age 42, Smith holds degrees from both the University of Missouri (BS) and Oklahoma City University (JD).
