U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has demanded Google CEO Sundar Pichai to appear before Congress and testify under oath about the company's controversial Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) program. Hawley took to Twitter to express his stance, stating, "Come testify to Congress. Under oath. In public."
Hawley criticized the AI tool for generating historically inaccurate images and text to align with the left's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agenda. The Gemini AI program faced backlash for creating misleading content such as depicting the Pope as a black woman and questioning the evidence of sexual violence by Hamas during the October 7 attacks on Israel.
In addition to his call for Pichai to testify, Senator Hawley emphasized the necessity of repealing Section 230 and granting Americans the ability to sue AI companies. He argued that without such measures, AI companies like Google could gain excessive control over various aspects of society, including news, information, data, and elections.
Hawley further criticized Google's AI practices, accusing the technology of spreading falsehoods and targeting conservatives. He urged for the empowerment of individuals to take legal action against AI companies and proposed implementing age restrictions on AI usage for children.
The Missouri Senator's comments on social media reflect his concerns about Google Gemini's potential influence in shaping public opinion and the need to address the regulatory framework surrounding AI technologies. Hawley's push for accountability and transparency in AI development aligns with his previous bipartisan efforts to address the implications of generative AI under Section 230 immunity.
