Tax-exempt organizations accused of promoting antisemitism and having possible connections to foreign terrorist groups have been referred for investigation. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) sent letters on Tuesday to the Attorneys General of six states where these nonprofits are based. This action follows a committee investigation into the tax-exempt sector, which found that some organizations were not adhering to their stated purposes, potentially violating state and federal laws.

Chairman Smith emphasized the committee's dedication to accountability, stating, "The Ways and Means Committee is committed to holding accountable any tax-exempt organization found to have ties to foreign terrorist organizations, engaged in activity that contradicts tax-exempt purposes, or participated in other illegal activity." He also called on state law enforcement agencies to take action against any organization involved in illegal activities.

Smith further highlighted Congress's responsibility: "Congress owes it to the American people to ensure any organization with tax-exempt status is operating for their stated tax-exempt purpose, and more importantly, following the letter of the law."
