Following reports of a cyber attack on the U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith has called for accountability and action. The attack, allegedly carried out by Chinese intelligence agencies, compromised government employee workstations.

Smith stated, "America's enemies will continue to test our resolve until we make clear that there are consequences." He highlighted concerns about vulnerabilities in Treasury employees' workstations which allowed hackers purportedly affiliated with the Chinese government to access official materials.

The incident is described as another cyber attack occurring during President Biden's administration. Smith emphasized the need for America to maintain its technological edge over China, noting a previous breach of telecommunications infrastructure as an indicator of potential threats.

Smith urged the Treasury Department and the Office of the Inspector General to conduct an investigation into the security lapse. He requested explanations on measures to prevent future vulnerabilities and assistance strategies for the incoming Trump Administration in countering such cyber threats.
